Incentives and Financing Program

The RDKB has partnered with FortisBC, and other organizations and levels of government to motivate you to act to conserve energy and lower your greenhouse gas emissions. Because sometimes we all need extra encouragement to do the right thing, and saving money can be very encouraging indeed.

Residential Retrofit Rebate Programs

Canada Greener Homes Initiative

The Canada Greener Homes Initiative provides grants and a loan for home evaluations and for retrofits. The eligible retrofits include home insulation, windows and doors, air sealing, thermostats, heating and renewable energy systems.

The Canada Greener Homes Initiative consists of:

  • Grants from $125 to $5,000 - To get a part of your costs back for eligible home retrofits.
  • Up to $600 as a maximum contribution towards the total costs of your pre and post retrofit EnerGuide home evaluations.
  • Interest Free Loan: from $5,000 to $40,000 with a repayment term of 10 years to help you undertake major home retrofits.

NEW Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Grant – up to $5,000 - To cover costs for changing your oil heating system to a heat pump. There is no need for a home energy evaluation as part of this grant.

CleanBC Better Homes and Home Renovation Rebate Program

Kootenay Boundary homeowners can take advantage of several home renovation rebates offered through the FortisBC rebates and CleanBC Better Homes Program, a partnership between the Province of B.C., BC Hydro, and FortisBC. 

These rebates are home improvements that will save you money, conserve energy, and lower your greenhouse gas emissions. You could receive up to $10,000 in rebates.

CleanBC Income Qualified Program

The CleanBC Income Qualified Program rebates cover 60–95% of the home upgrade costs for income qualified households making energy-saving home upgrades more affordable. Eligibility and rebates are based on income levels in the household.

Energy Conservation Assistance Program

ECAP provides a free home energy evaluation, energy saving tips and free energy upgrades (light bulbs, exterior door weather stripping etc). Some homes may qualify for an ENERGY STAR® certified refrigerator and in the future (from mid to late 2021) some may qualify for further upgrades like furnace. https://www.fortisbc.com/rebates/home/free-home-energy-evaluation-and-upgrades


Residential Financing Program

There are several financing programs available to assist people with financing their upgrade. These include:

Canada Greener Homes Loan

Interest Free Loan: from $5,000 to $40,000 with a repayment term of 10 years to help you undertake major home retrofits.

FortisBC Heat Pump Loan
FortisBC Heat Pump Loan program provides loans up to $6,500 at a 1.9% fixed interest rate, over ten years for the upgrading your electric furnace or baseboard heaters to a high-efficiency air source heat pump. Customers can apply for the Heat Pump loan or Heat Pump rebate but not both.

CleanBC Better Homes Low-Interest Financing Program

CleanBC provides loans up to $40,000 with a promotional interest rate of 0% over 5 years for switching from fossil fuel (oil, propane or natural gas) heating system to a heat pump. Customers can apply for the CleanBC loan or Heat Pump rebate but not both.

Residential New Homes Rebate Programs

New Home Program Incentives: FortisBC and the CleanBC Better Homes Program offer support and rebates to local home builders who are interested in preparing themselves for the BC Energy Step Code and this new model of measuring efficiency.

If you build a home more energy efficient than the minimum BC Building Code requirements, you can qualify for a home performance rebate ranging from $3,000 to $10,000 through the FortisBC and the CleanBC Better Homes Program.

Residential Electric Vehicle Rebates

Electric Vehicles

Buying an electric vehicle is more affordable than ever. You can apply for rebates on eligible cars, SUVs, trucks and vans and get rebates on charging stations, too.

Province rebates - To understand more and apply for BC Go Electric Vehicle rebates that are up to $4,000.

Federal rebates are managed through your local dealership. There is up to $5,000 available. For the list of vehicles eligible for the Zero-Emission Vehicles (iZEV) Program incentive

EV Charger rebates Residential homes

Get a rebate of up to 50% (up to $350) to install a Level 2 (240 volt) charging station in your single-family home, duplex, or townhouse with private garage or dedicated parking area.

Commercial Rebate Programs

Energy Step Code Incentives – FortisBC and Better Buildings BC offer incentives for the construction of Part 3 commercial buildings that achieve higher energy performance beyond the minimum levels required by the BC Building Code. The program offers a clear incentive structure based on the performance levels of the new BC Energy Step Code.

Other Energy Efficiency Incentives – There are a variety of rebates for high efficiency commercial such as appliances, boilers, heat pumps, controls, and lighting.

Commercial Electric Vehicle Charger Rebates

Federal, provincial and even private industry incentives are accelerating EV adoption.

There several different rebates and other perks have a big impact on accelerating the uptake of electric vehicles in BC. They are provided by the federal government, provincial government, and even private industry.
