Deputy Fire Chief – Fire Prevention & Life Safety Officer
BIG WHITE FIRE DEPARTMENT

The Big White Ski Resort is a vibrant, growing resort community located 45 minutes North East of beautiful Kelowna BC and the Okanagan Valley. With the opening of our world-class mountain bike park in 2017, Big White is now a year round resort welcoming hundreds of thousands of skiers and bikers annually. The Big White Ski Resort has experienced an increase in permanent residents and the construction of several new housing and multi residential developments. Our community school continues to grow and develop exceptional educational curriculum and outdoor activities.

POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Big White Fire Department is seeking an experienced Fire Inspector. Under the direction of the Big White Fire Chief, this position will perform inspections of residential, commercial and institutional buildings to ensure owners of public and private buildings and structures are code compliant. The Fire and Life Safety Inspector will respond to internal and external inquiries and provide technical information, advice and assistance to other departments, government agencies and the public in a manner that is tactful, clear, concise and appropriate. In addition to Incident Command and Firefighter duties, other responsibilities within the portfolio include Occupational Health, Safety, and Apparatus Maintenance Program.
This is an incredible opportunity for a Paid On-Call Firefighter with the right qualifications who is ready to step up into a leadership role and provide inspection services to the community. This position may also suit experienced Fire leaders looking to relocate to the Big White area. The ideal candidate will be available to commence by mid-November 2021, to allow for handover and training with our outgoing Deputy Fire Chief.
 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

  • Certification to NFPA 1001 FF Level 1 & 2 or equivalent training/experience.
  • Certification Fire Inspector 1 NFPA 1031
  • Fire Cause and Origin Level 1
  • Fire Officer 1
  • Fire Service Instructor 1
  • EMALB Licensed Medical First Responders Full Schedule 2
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a firefighter and/or fire officer, with proven supervisory skills and ability to direct, evaluate and effectively manage staff and paid on call members.
  • Graduation from a secondary school (Grade 12) or equivalent supplemented by post-secondary or technical courses related to the position.
  • Valid British Columbia driver’s license, class 3 c/w air endorsement
  • Extensive knowledge of provincial and federal codes and municipal bylaws;
  • Thorough knowledge relative to fire inspections, fire investigation, and related matters;
  • Demonstrated computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and working knowledge of Fire Department Management (FDM);
  • Strong customer service skills;
  • Excellent communication skills – verbal and written;
  • Ability to exercise courtesy and tact when dealing with the public and external agencies;

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Fire Officer 2
  • Fire Service Instructor 2
  • Construction and vehicle maintenance experience.

The Big White Fire Department provides Fire Services to the Big White community and is part of the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary Fire Services group.

The salary range for this position is $75,000 – $78,000/annum, dependent on qualifications. Fire Department members also receive $6400.00 housing allowance annually, as well as a competitive benefit package. The successful candidate will be required to reside within the community of Big White.

WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR LEVEL 1 OR LEVEL 2
Full-Time Benefitted Temporary Position
Environmental Services – Trail, BC

The Regional District of Kootenay is seeking a certified Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Level 1 or 2 for the Columbia Pollution Control Centre in Trail, BC. This is a unionized position, on a 1 year temporary, benefitted, full-time contract.

The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) is comprised of five electoral areas and eight municipalities with a total population of over 31,000 residents. Employing over 175 employees, the RDKB provides 69 services to its constituents. Our Head Office is based in Trail, BC, on the Columbia River, just 9 kilometers north of the Canada-USA border. Nestled in the Selkirk and Monashee mountain ranges, Trail is a four-season destination, offering an abundance of outstanding recreational activities including mountain biking, skiing, golfing, hiking, fishing and kayaking.

Under the daily guidance of the Chief Operator, the Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the wastewater treatment facility, pumping stations and collections system. This position will suit an Operator who is conscientious, with awareness of and ability to respond to subtle changes in plant processes and its corresponding infrastructure. We are seeking a problem solving, adaptive worker who enjoys learning on the fly, working both independently and as part of the team.

To be successful in this position, applicants must possess their Wastewater Treatment Plant or Collections Operator Level I or II certification (WTP or WWC Level I or II) through EOCP. The successful candidate must also have the ability to perform a variety of physical duties.

This is a temporary position 1 year position with CUPE Local 2254 offering an hourly rate of pay of $35.30 for Level 1 Operator and $36.29 for a Operator Level 2 (January 1, 2021). This is a full time position, working 40 hours per week. Please review the full job description for more information.

HEALTH & SAFETY ADVISOR
ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT
2-YEAR TEMPORARY FULL-TIME

The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) is located in the southern interior of British Columbia. Surrounded by mountains, lakes and rivers, this region is abundant in breathtaking vistas and endless adventures, not to mention a burgeoning arts and culture scene.
The RDKB administration office is located in Trail, BC, which combined with the nearby communities of Warfield, Montrose, Fruitvale and the resort municipality of Rossland have a population of approximately 20,000. The area is well known for its downhill and cross-country
skiing and mountain biking.

The RDKB is currently seeking applications for their temporary 2-year full-time Health and Safety Advisor position. This is a new position created to assist the RDKB’s 69 services, 175 employees and more than 130 paid on call and volunteer fire fighters to improve health and safety culture, systems, practices and outcomes throughout the organization. This is a benefitted, 2-year position (exempt), with the possibility of extension.

Reporting to the Manager of Infrastructure and Sustainability, the Health and Safety Advisor provides safety expertise, review and support across the entire organization. The successful candidate will initially evaluate the existing safety programs, systems and statistics and based on their findings, recommend a work plan and priorities for Senior Management’s review and support. With a focus on compliance and education, much of this position will involve updating the current OHS program to fit organizational and legislative needs, then collaborating with service managers and internal subject matter experts to help them understand and meet their responsibilities, with the ultimate goal of improving safety outcomes for all.

To be considered for this position, candidates must possess:
• Bachelor degree in a relevant field, plus three years related safety experience in progressively more challenging roles, OR a relevant combination of education and experience;
• Working knowledge of relevant Federal and Provincial legislation, with demonstrated ability to apply it in various workplaces and services;
• Ability to write and train others on safe work procedures, in line with OHS regulation and a broad range of industry standards;
• Additional safety certifications, including but not limited to BCMSA Peer Auditor or CRSP designation considered an asset;
• Valid BC Driver’s License.

In addition to the required qualifications, the ideal candidate will possess excellent relationship building, partnership and training skills. They will be a strong communicator, who is able to use their tact, diplomacy and adaptability to help stakeholders achieve compliance, rather than taking an
enforcement approach.
