The RDKB is seeking applications to fill a new casual Landfill Attendant position in the Boundary region. Casual Landfill Attendants work at multiple locations, including Grand Forks Landfill, West Boundary Landfill (Greenwood), Christina Lake Transfer Station, Rock Creek Transfer Station and the Beaverdell Transfer Station. This is an on-call position and may work between 0 and 40 hours per week to cover staff absences including vacation leave, sick leave and other leaves as required. The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) is seeking a reliable and qualified individual for the position of Deputy Fire Chief – Operations and Training with the Big White Fire Department. Reporting to the Fire Chief, the Deputy Fire Chief is responsible for directing and delivering first responder, fire and emergency service training to all members, including career, Work Experience Program (WEP), volunteer and support staff of the Big White Fire Department. The Deputy Fire Chief will assume the duties of the Fire Chief in his absence and is responsible for overall maintenance and effectiveness of department equipment, vehicles, supplies and facilities.

This position will suit an energetic individual who is educated, experienced and dynamic in leading training and operations. Key work examples in this role include:

  • Plan and evaluate the overall activities and programs of the Training Division
  • Continue to recruit, develop, monitor, and supervise the department’s Work Experience Program
  • Develop and/or deliver training programs on any technical training subject for WEP and POC Firefighters.
  • Develop and update Operational Guidelines for the department.
  • Coordinates attendance and maintains training records for all Fire crew.
  • Coordinate a preventative maintenance program for department apparatus and firefighter equipment
  • Supervises the department’s inventory control program.
  • Respond to emergencies; establish command and direct incident operations.
  • Perform fire fighting, rescue, first aid and other fire related services.
  • Perform the role of Duty Officer and act as Fire Chief (when required).

Desirable knowledge, skills and abilities for this role:

  • Considerable experience in fire ground command, plus senior supervisory and administrative responsibilities in a Fire Department setting
  • Fire Service Instructor Level 1 preferred
  • Satisfactory completion of NFPA 1001 Level 1 and 2
  • JIBC Fire Officer program, equivalent, or actively working towards and committed to completion of
  • Justice Institute of BC Certified Evaluator or equivalent
  • Emergency Scene Management Level I
  • Emergency FR Instructor
  • Certified as a Fire Apparatus Driver Instructor.

Reporting to the Manager of Infrastructure and Sustainability, the successful candidate will join a team of professional operators working across multiple water and wastewater treatment facilities in the Greater Trail area, including the Columbia Pollution Control Centre (CPCC).

The CPCC is in the early stages of more then $63 million in upgrading to the wastewater treatment facility from primary to secondary treatment, which is vital to support regional ecosystems, residents and First Nations. This system will not only have additional biological treatment and UV disinfection but will also include an effluent heat-recovery and reclaimed water system with numerous benefits to the community.

The Water/Wastewater Operator is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the CPCC facility and pumping station, and regional mains. Under the guidance of the Chief Operator, the Operator operates a variety of equipment and performs routine and emergency maintenance and repairs throughout the area. This position will suit an Operator who is conscientious, with awareness of and the ability to respond to subtle changes in plant processes and corresponding infrastructure. The ideal candidate will demonstrate mechanical aptitude and enjoy working both independently as well as part of the team.

  • WWTP or WWC Level I or II certification through EOCP

The RDKB is currently seeking applications for a Victim Services Case Worker to join the Trail & Greater District RCMP-based Victim Services Program. The Case Worker will work with police to deliver services to individuals and families who have been affected by crime and other traumatic incidents in the Greater Trail area. This is a permanent, benefitted position including health, dental, paid vacation and sick time.

The Victim Services Case Worker will provide emotional, administrative and logistical support to victims, witnesses and their family members following a crime or traumatic event. They will assist clients by providing status information on police investigations and assist them in learning about and navigating the justice system, as well as learning skills and practices for crime prevention. This is a broad role, with the goal of meeting clients where they’re at and empowering them as they move forward.

The hours of work are 20 hours a week, with a flexible schedule. The ideal candidate will not only possess the required qualifications and experience, but also demonstrate tact, discretion and a high regard for client welfare in all that they do.

The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary is seeking an energetic and qualified individual for the position of Fire Chief, Big White Fire Department. Reporting to the Regional District’s General Manager of Operations, the Fire Chief is responsible for managing all aspects of the fire department, including administration, recruitment and management, fire suppression, training and fire prevention activities. The ideal Fire Chief will be a forward thinker, providing strategic direction to develop and implement policies and actions to ensure the continuity of fire protection service in the Big White area.

The ideal candidate will possess strong interpersonal and leadership skills and excels at building effective working relationships with all Fire Department staff, local community groups, the general public, elected officials, Regional District staff and mutual aid partners. Experience in training volunteers is a must.

The Big White Fire Department is a composite department with 3 career Chief Officers and approximately 35 paid on-call fire fighters. The department provides the village of Big White and the Big White Ski Resort with a wide range of services including: fire suppression and prevention, fire & life safety presentations, public assists, emergency medical response, auto extrication and rope rescue. It also provides road rescue services to over 90kms of Big White Road and Highway 33 to Carmi, and emergency medical response to the residents of Idabel Lake.

The Big White Fire Department responds to an average of 260 emergencies annually, primarily between November and April. The department was accepted into a pilot project with the Emergency Health and Services Commission to train its members to EMR level of care, allowing responders to provide additional medical protocols that enhance patient care while awaiting BCAS paramedics. The department also recruits and trains between 5 to 7 work experience program firefighters each year who train, live and respond full time from the fire hall from July through the winter ski season, with recruitment recurring annually each spring.

Desirable knowledge, skills and abilities for this role:

  • Degree in business or public administration or a fire related discipline and at least 5 years of satisfactory service as a Senior Fire Officer, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Satisfactory completion of recognized Fire service ‘instructor/evaluator’ training
  • Satisfactory completion of NFPA 1001 Level 2
  • Satisfactory completion of Fire Inspector training through a recognized institution
  • Enrolled in Fire Officer training with satisfactory completion of a minimum of Fire Officer II
  • First Responder Level 3 First Aid (EMR?)
  • Proficient comprehensionof the Incident Command System (ICS); minimum ICS 200 completed
  • Professional computer skills, including ability to produce reports and plans

In this role, the successful candidate would provide on-call support and coverage for other Clerk Secretary Receptionist staff from various departments while on leave. Work may be for a few days, up to a number of weeks, depending on the need.

This is a casual, on-call position offering $30.56 per hour (2022), plus 10% in lieu of benefits. Benefits, terms and conditions are per the CUPE Local 2254 Collective Agreement.
