Drop Down FAQ section

RDKB compost is a ‘nitrogen rich’ soil amendment used to support plant growth. It is not soil itself, so it should be properly applied for good results. It is not being marketed as a fertilizer, as we are not guaranteeing nutrient analysis for this batch of compost. The compost is fully matured. No biosolids are used in the manufacture of the Compost.

For flowerbeds, gardens, and planters, compost should be mixed no more than 1/3 by volume with topsoil or potting soil. Too much compost can be detrimental to plants. For lawns for top dressing of lawns add a maximum of 1 centimeter of compost once every two years. Do not smother the grass blades.

Remember to wash hands after handling. Do not exceed the recommended amounts.

See RDKB Compost Information Label for recommended uses and other details.

It is Class A Compost tested by an accredited laboratory (A&L Canada Laboratories) Class A standards are set by the Province under the Organic Matters Recycling Regulation (OMRR). It’s been tested and passed for:

  • Heavy Metals
  • Pathogens (e.g., coliforms)
  • Sharps and foreign matter (plastics, glass etc.)

It is safe for use in home and agricultural food gardens and for landscaping.

Compost should be free from weed seeds, but the RDKB does not guarantee the absence of weeds.

Compost sold at McKelvey Creek Landfill was produced at the RDCK Central Composting Facility near Salmo while the compost sold at Grand Forks Landfill and Rock Creek Transfer Station was produced at the RDKB Grand Forks Landfill.

It was made using the collected organic waste from municipal, residential, and commercial organic waste.

Inputs are food waste, yard and garden, chipped clean wood.
